Police arrest trio in probe over Lurgan disorder

Eighteen days after serious public disorder flared in a republican part of Lurgan, the PSNI have made further arrests.

It relates to incidents on Monday, March 28.

A 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and assault causing actual bodily harm; a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray and obstruction; and a 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of an offensive weapon and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The three men are currently “assisting police with enquiries at Lurgan police station”, said the PSNI.

A 15-year-old boy is among those who had subsequently been charged over incidents which took place that day.

There was much criticism of the police at the time for not doing more to stop such disorder.

The PSNI’s Craigavon officers responded in a statement which said that “next time you demand action, criticise us for not arresting every potential rioter or illegal marcher, or take to keyboards to tell us what we should be doing... stop”.

They added: “For the things that have been complained about in Lurgan this weekend, investigations are ongoing. We will pursue people and bring them before the courts, but we’re going to do that in a way that is best for everyone concerned.”
