2016 election: It's all in the balance for Fermanagh and South Tyrone

Elections in this constituency have been too close to call in recent years.

Stung by the narrow loss of its Westminster seat to the UUP’s Tom Elliott last year, Sinn Fein is confident enough to field a fourth candidate along with the party’s three incumbents.

However, if the SDLP can build on the level of support from the two previous local government elections, then the party would have a reasonable chance gaining a seat at the expense of Sinn Fein.

Ulster Unionist Alastair Patterson was co-opted to replace Tom Elliott at Stormont, but in the battle to retain his seat he will face stiff competition from UUP running mate Rosemary Barton.

Some commentators are speculating that both UUP candidates could come close if Tom Elliott’s votes are spilt equally between the pair.

First Minister and DUP leader Arlene Foster should be comfortably re-elected and party colleague Maurice (Lord) Morrow will be confident he can do likewise.

Former Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew is expected to return to Stormont having topped the poll in 2011 with 19 per cent of the vote.
