PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton shook hands with a senior Sinn Fein member last night, just days after saying Provisional IRA members had been involved in the murder of Kevin McGuigan.

Mr Hamilton shared a stage in Londonderry with SF chairperson Declan Kearney at an event attempting to address the past.

Mr Kearney said what was needed was “collective acknowledgement of pain caused by the past to make sure that it does not happen again”.

Mr Hamilton said that “people have questioned the appropriateness of my attendance here tonight...”.

He went on to reiterate his belief that the PIRA still exists, but also that the senior Sinn Fein leadership are still committed to the peace process.
