The Translink scheme will see the faces of nominated figures appear on a “bus of legends” – although the public transport body has stated nominees must be “non-political”.

Nominations are open until Sunday April 17. A shortlist will then be announced on Thursday April 21.

Translink Group chief executive Chris Conway said it will be unveiled during “Bus and Train Week”, from June 6 to June 12.

He said: “Perhaps it’s a sporting hero, an acclaimed actor or a rock star – we’re encouraging everyone who’s proud of Belfast to make their nominations – if they’re a great ambassador for the city, we want to know!”

Following the nomination period, an independent judging panel will create a shortlist.

Then the public will be asked to vote online to decide the final two ‘Metro Legends’ who will receive the official recognition.

Judging panel chair, Anne McMullan, director of marketing and communications at Visit Belfast, said: “This is a great opportunity to celebrate the best of Belfast – a mobile tribute to home-grown talent that will be seen by both local people and visitors.”

The criteria is that nominees must have “made a positive impact in their field of expertise”, have been born in Belfast or have a strong association with the city region, must be alive, and must be non-political.
