Aviation fans have been left disappointed after the Red Arrows display team was forced to cancel an appearance at an air show in Co Down.

The RAF display team is also understood to have agreed to a fly past at the Ulster Grand Prix – in honour of the late ‘flying doctor’ John Hinds – but that was also abandoned due to problems with the pilots’ communication system.

Apologising for having to pull out of the Newcastle Festival of Flight, the team posted a message on Twitter. It said: “We’re sorry to announce, due to technical issues making our jets unserviceable this afternoon, the planned display at Newcastle, Northern Ireland, is cancelled.
