The MP for Upper Bann has asked republicans to show the same leadership which saw 150 Union and loyalist flags taken down across Portadown.
The flags, which were torn and in poor condition, were removed from lampposts over two nights by members of local communities. The consensus on their removal came after a meeting between community groups and individuals within the Protestant, unionist, loyalist).
The initiative is being led by community development group Regenerate and is aimed at ensuring that the flags are treated with pride and respect.
Upper Bann MP David Simpson said: “No one wants to see tattered flags on lampposts. It is not only an eyesore but it is also enormously disrespectful to the Union Flag. In recent weeks around Easter many areas have been decked with a plethora of republican flags. Whilst this initiative is tackling loyalist flags, I want to see leadership right across the community.”
