One Co Down father picked the night of all nights to introduce his young son to the world of international football – Belfast style.

Neil Wilson from Bangor brought seven-year-old Matthew to Windsor Park for his first Green and White Army experience, and left with that ‘wouldn’t it be great if it was like this all the time’ feeling.

On a night of almost surreal happenings, not only did Northern Ireland canter into the finals of a major tournament, at one point the world’s greatest golfer was just a few seats away leading the massed choir in the North Stand.

The Wilsons will cherish their picture of Rory McIlroy in full voice. Mr Wilson said: “It was such a thrilling night. It was my son’s first Northern Ireland match and he was absolutely buzzing throughout, and on the way home.”
