Rory McIlroy pays tribute to golf 'pioneer' Arnold Palmer

Rory McIlroy has taken to Twitter to pay tribute to golfing great Arnold Palmer.

Palmer, who had 62 PGA Tour wins to his name and seven majors, passed away on Sunday at the age of 87. Having been credited as bringing the sport to the masses, the American was known as 'The King'.

McIlroy tweeted: "Remembering the special times I spent with Mr Palmer at Bay Hill. A true pioneer for our sport. Forever remembered."

Portrush's Graeme McDowell said his legacy will endure. "Just heard the news about #TheKing. Can't believe it. Amazing man and his legacy in the game and in our hearts will live forever. #RIPArnie," he tweeted.

Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke said he was "very sad" to hear of Palmer's passing. Asked what his favourite memory of Palmer was he replied, "Him just being him."
