A campaign group has praised gay actor Sir Ian McKellen for calling for same-sex marriage to be extended to Northern Ireland.

Amnesty International, which has been pushing for a change in the law in the Province, said the Lord of the Rings star’s comments were “a reminder of how much we are now out of step with the rest of the UK and Ireland”.

The group quoted him as having said that it was “rather unseemly” for Northern Ireland not to have adopted gay marriage, adding he hopes the Province “will catch up with the rest of us now”.
