Police and Army technical officers are still at the scene of a security alert in Londonderry.
A number of homes were evacuated yesterday afternoon in the Southway area and a road has been closed.
Army bomb disposal officers and specialist search teams are reported to be at the scene.
A number of cordons remain in place.
Ch Supt Mark McEwan told the BBC that the officers are looking for “an explosive device, something that is in a very public area”.
He added that those “who would plant devices such as this...have absolutely no regard for the safety of the community”.
“We are bringing every tactic that we have at our disposal in order to try and get complete assurance around this operation so we can ensure people’s safety in the community and also that we can also get it done as quickly as possible,” he said.
The alert ended later on Friday.
