Sinn Fein will take part in a World War One commemoration at Dublin’s Irish National War Memorial Gardens for the first time this weekend.
Lord Mayor of Belfast Arder Carson, who had laid a wreath at Belfast’s cenotaph earlier in the month, will be at the service on Saturday organised by the Republic’s Royal British Legion.
It will include a parade of Royal British Legion and Regimental Standards.
At the invitation of the Taoiseach, councillor Carson will also be attending the National Day of Commemoration Ceremony at Dublin’s Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Sunday.
In a statement, the lord mayor said: “By remembering those who sacrificed their lives we are also paying tribute to those who work for peace and reconciliation. It is important that we recognise our shared history in order to move forward with a shared future.”
