An east Belfast Sinn Fein man who has now become a member of the Republic’s Seanad has pledged to bring forward a bill to extend voting rights to what he called “northern citizens”.
Niall O Donnghaile, from the Short Strand area of the city where he was formerly a lord mayor, said the move would be his first act in the upper house of the Irish parliament.
He said: “I will be a strong voice for Irish citizens in the North of Ireland.
“Successive Irish governments have shirked their responsibilities and this has been due, in part, to a lack of representation.
“I will remind any future government that Ireland does not stop at the border.”
