Children at more than 300 schools across Great Britain had the day off school yesterday as snow storms brought chaos to many areas.

A further 100 or more schools were closed in Northern Ireland yesterday after a night of heavy snowfall in many parts of the Province.

The weather also forced the closure of Belfast Zoo.

Passengers were stranded at Manchester Airport after it was forced it to close both its runways for several hours as bad weather struck.

An amber “be prepared” snow warning for northern England was last night downgraded to yellow but knock-on effects are expected to continue.

The disruption was caused in part by “thundersnow storms” – when the rain is replaced by snow – the Met Office said.
