Survey reveals NI's favourite social media sites for '˜toilet surfing'

A study conducted by bathroom company found that 54% of people in Northern Ireland and the Republoic have updated, streamed, swiped and shopped on their favourite apps from the lavatory.

The research, carried out by Sanctuary Bathrooms, saw one in five admit to playing music whilst on the loo and over 15% of women saying they used their phone to make an order online, compared to 8% of men.

The study revealed that while people living on both sides of the Irish border spend up to six hours a day per day on social media, on average 29% of this time is used whilst on the throne.

Three in ten people surveyed admitted to using their phone to snapchat a friend, with 30% of 16-24-year olds being the biggest offenders.

For Belfast the average data used while ‘toilet surfing’ was as follows:

Facebook: 29%

Spotify: 27%

Snapchat: 11%

Netflix : 11%

Tinder: 6%

The survey also asked the which non-tech items people in Northern Ireland and the Republic used on the toilet.

Just over 30% of men said they read a newspaper on the loo while one in five people read a magazine. A quarter of participants said they read a book on the toilet.

Around 75% of participants aged over 45 said they never used an app on the toilet.
