Teenage girl dies after hit-and-run in Armagh

The teenage girl who was injured in a hit and run road traffic collision yesterday has died.

Police have confirmed that 19-year-old Lesley-Ann McCarragher from the Armagh area died following a hit and run road traffic collision on the Monaghan Road, Armagh, around 12.25pm yesterday.

A PSNI spokesman added: “A 17-year-old male has been arrested and is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.”

Detective Inspector Brian Foster would continue to appeal to anyone who was on the Monaghan Road, Armagh yesterday and who may have witnessed this incident to contact Police at Armagh on the non-emergency number 101 and he would also appeal to anyone who has any information about a white Saab car to also contact Police at Armagh on the non-emergency number 101. Newry & Armagh DUP representative William Irwin, who knows the McCarragher family, has told of his sadness at the news.

“This is an extremely concerning and very sad situation for Lesley-Ann’s family and I want to pass on my deepest sympathy and my prayers to the McCarragher family at this very traumatic and difficult time,” he said.

“It appears that a car hit Lesley-Ann but failed to stop at the scene which under these very tragic circumstances, is a most serious matter. I would echo the calls by Police for any members of the public who may have witnessed this incident and the vehicle involved, to come forward immediately with any information. It is very important that the whereabouts of this vehicle and the person driving it is quickly established.”
