Teenager accused of letting off flare wants football ban lifted

A teenager accused of possessing a flare let off at an Irish Premiership game wants a ban on him attending other football matches lifted, it has emerged.

The 17-year-old youth was arrested at Windsor Park stadium in Belfast during last month’s fixture between Linfield and Glentoran.

He faces a charge of possessing a firework and flare at a regulated football match.

The alleged offence is based on CCTV footage from the ground on March 12.

The accused was detained and searched after recordings were viewed.

Accompanied by his father, he appeared before Belfast Youth Court for the first time on Wednesday.

Defence solicitor Adrian Harvey disclosed plans to seek a variation on bail terms that currently prohibits his client from being at any regulated football matches.

According to Mr Harvey the Youth Justice Agency are backing the application on the basis that it represents a positive activity for the accused.

The case was adjourned to Friday for a further hearing.
