A newly commissioned bronze cast portrait of the actor, singer and travel writer Richard Hayward has been presented to the Linen Hall Library in Belfast.

The handover of the Hayward ‘head’, by his son Richard Hayward Jr (pictured), coincides with the republication for the first time in 65 years of his 1950 travel book ‘Ulster and the City of Belfast’.

Writer and journalist Paul Clements, who wrote the introduction to Hayward’s biography Romancing Ireland – which was republished in 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his untimely death in a car crash – said he hopes the celebrated Irish writer will now again be recognised.

“He wrote accessible books about folklore and legend and other information that people wanted preserved,” he said.
