The latest assault on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, at Racecourse Road, took place last weekend when a number of windows were broken.

The cost of repairing the damage is estimated at £400.

It’s understood Sunday Service had to be cancelled as the main hall was covered in broken glass.

A similar incident took place at the church just weeks ago.

Local SDLP councillor Brian Tierney has branded the vandals “mindless thugs.”

He said: “Vandalism is unacceptable in our community, and is it especially unacceptable at a place of worship. “The church and its congregation have been part of the community for more than fifty years and these recent attacks should not be tolerated.

“Apart from a place for Mormons to practise their faith, the church is also a valuable community asset, hosting fun days for local families and an annual Christmas Carol Service.

“It also provides genealogy research services and is also a designated emergency centre for the Ballyarnett area when families are evacuated due to flooding or bomb scares.

“The SDLP fully supports the local Mormon community and value its contribution to society. We would urge those responsible for these attacks to stop and have some respect for diversity within our community,” added Councillor Tierney.
