VIDEO: Major Lagan search is false alarm

A major search got under way on the River Lagan last night but ended when everyone was safely accounted for.

It is believed that a canoe was found on the river at Drumbeg, south of Belfast, leading to concerns that someone might be in the river. Two men are thought to have been found safe and well before 6pm.

Fire vehicles, a helicopter, police and river rescue teams attended the scene, close to St Patrick’s Church of Ireland and not far from Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park.

Fire Service would not comment on their involvement in the search, saying that it was a police matter. The News Letter was unable to check the details of the incident with the PSNI, because they do not field press queries after 5pm at weekends.
