Team Ireland’s winning streak at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 continued today with a further seven medals scooped across equestrian, athletics and table tennis events.
Organisers say the overall medal haul at the event in Los Angeles stands at 22 with many contestants recording their personal bests.
Among those to scoop a gold medal was 15-year-old Ulster equestrian athlete, Déarbháil Savage, from Mowhan in Co Armagh.
A short video capturing the tears and whoops of joy the moment her family learned of her success has been shared on Facebook.
Caroline Brennan, head equestrian coach, said yesterday, Day Four, of the competition had been “a great day for our equestrian athletes”.
“Dearbhail is thriving on all of the attention out here at the Games – everyone loves her,” she said. “I feel very proud of the whole team,” she added. “They’re competing in great heat.”
