A Co Armagh woman has appeared in court today charged with choking her sister on New Year’s Day.
Danielle Smith (27) is accused of attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle her sister Nicole Smith to render her unconscious, insensible or incapable of resistance with intent to enable another person to cause her actual bodily harm.
A police officer told the court he believed he could connect Smith to the offence. He said that after she was charged, Smith told police: “I will choke her again.”
Constable Johnston said the victim “blacked out, woke up in hospital and simply has no recollection” of the alleged attack.
Her defence solicitor said however that comment came while Smith “was still inebriated,” adding that in sobriety she described her sister as “my best friend.”
“My instructions are that a row kicked off, she was choked first and she choked back - she can only put it down to alcohol,” claimed the lawyer.
Mother-of-two Smith, from Clanrolla Park in the Moyraverty area of Craigavon, was released on her own bail of £500 and ordered to stay away from both her sister and her father.
Ordering Smith to come back to court on January 13, District Judge Amanda Henderson also imposed a curfew and completely barred Smith from alcohol, warning her that any breach would result in her going into custody and “being removed from your children.”
