A controlled explosion has been carried out on a World War Two mortar shell found on a beach in Co Down.

The device was reported shortly after midnight on Thursday close to the Twelve Arches in Dundrum.

PSNI officers maintained a cordon at the scene until Army technical officers could operate at first light on Friday morning.

Coastguard staff assisted in ensuring access to the unexploded shell before it was made safe.
