YFCU farm safety mentors complete training with HSENI

Ten Young Farmers' Clubs of Ulster members have completed training with HSENI so that they can deliver farm safety talks to YFCU clubs as well as other youth organisations across Northern Ireland.

A number of these farm safety mentors have also been trained to deliver talks to children of primary school age (5-11 years old).

Many YFCU clubs have taken advantage of the farm safety training talks so far and this is set to continue in the future.

During the farm safety talks the mentors highlight the main hazards and risks which continue to impact on the daily lives of our farmers.

Speaking about the initiative, head of HSENI’s farm safety team, Malcolm Downey said: “This is a great initiative whereby highly respected senior members of the Young Farmers’ Clubs deliver important farm safety messages to their fellow members.

“Having the farm safety message delivered by representatives actively involved in the farming industry has been invaluable. The mentors have been able to bring their own real life practical experience which has enhanced the training with the young farmers.”

YFCU president Roberta Simmons commented: “We as an organisation pride ourselves on the work we do with the Health and Safety Executive to deliver farm safety messages to our members and encourage advocacy for future safety.

“We hope that by delivering these talks around our counties and clubs, members will pay careful attention to the health and safety rules that govern farming and take these messages home to their parents and siblings to reduce the chance of problems occurring.

“We also hope that in doing so this will help significantly reduce the personal, social and financial costs of farm accidents.”
