Young mother '˜woke up next to partner's brother-in-law'

A young mother who thought her partner had climbed into bed beside her was shocked to discover that it was not him, but his American brother-in-law, Belfast Crown Court heard yesterday.

The 36-year-old American, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is on trial denying two charges of sexual assault on July 6 last year.

He had travelled to Northern Ireland along with his wife and young daughter for a double family christening.

He denies that anything happened between them and suggested to police the woman was making the claims for financial gain, or in an attempt to cause a family split.

A jury of six women and six men was told that the young mum only realised it was not her partner in bed beside her, when his brother-in-law spoke to her in his American accent.

In a police videotaped interview the woman wept as she told how she was awoken by someone kissing and touching her. She thought it was her partner whom she had earlier left in a hotel with other family and friends celebrating the christening of the two baby girls.

The woman told police at all times she thought it was her partner.
