As the president of the Co-operative Party branch in Northern Ireland (an affiliate of the Labour Party), I urge all trade unionists and ‘people on the left’ in Northern Ireland to register as a supporter of the party before August 12, thereby being able to participate in the leadership election.
This is a unique opportunity for voters in Northern Ireland to help shape and mould policies decided between the big parties and also, most importantly, the country’s political direction .The result is likely to be very close, therefore voters in Northern Ireland could have a significant impact on the decision as to who should be the next leader of the opposition. Participation will also advance our campaign to persuade Labour to contest the Assembly elections next year, and thereby to offer Northern Ireland voters a much-needed ‘real ‘opposition to the Stormont Executive.
