British rule reason for republican resistance

With reference to Morning View (June 2) – Put the blame back where it belongs: with republicans.

Blame republicans if you believe they were to blame.

They are at least responsible for their own actions.

However, would IRA republicanism exist without the existence of British rule and its security forces?

Whatever way foreign rule is dressed up, it breeds resentment and fosters resistance.

Imagine Irish rule over unionists. Does Britain’s 1920 Partition of Ireland Act count as a “minor failing” of British rule?

To quote Chris Moncrieff (June 2): “But the plan to restore to Britain the right to conduct its own affairs without interference from Europe appears to have hit the buffers.”

In contrast, the very concept of Ireland’s right to conduct its own affairs without interference from Britain is inconceivable to the British unionist mindset.
