Reading the climate change letter signed by a group of religious leaders (September 26) the words of the Lord Jesus come to mind: ‘For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?’ (Mark 8:36).
Yes, what would it benefit any of us if we achieve climate change targets and lose our own soul?
Lets get things into perspective.
Man’s greatest problem is sin. It is not climate change.
Man’s greatest need is to be saved from sin. This can only happen when individuals, in repentance, seek God’s forgiveness, and place their trust in the finished work of Christ on Calvary.
That is why the Lord Jesus Christ commissioned His disciples to evangelise not environmentalise.
It is God made climate change, not man made, that we need to be most concerned about.
Noah was not only a boat builder but also a preacher of righteousness, until God closed the door of the Ark.
What followed was a worldwide flood which was the biggest climate change event since the creation of the world.
Two Peter chapter 3 deals with the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Verses 9-13 speak about the ‘day of the Lord’ when God will destroy the earth by fire and the elements shall melt with fervent heat (which is a lot more than +2°C ).
Is the church today going to be a trendy church trying to limit global warming to 2°C?
Or will it be a true church telling people to flee from the wrath to come, and come to the Lord Jesus Christ?
