I would like to wish my party leader happiness for years to come as he announces his intention to retire in the coming weeks.

Peter Robinson has been a dear friend to me for many, many years, and I have no doubt that today’s news will be met with great personal sadness by many in the DUP whether they be members, supporters or elected representatives. All of us hold Peter in the highest esteem, not just as a politician and leader, but as a good man and friend.

The significance of Peter Robinson’s contribution to society in Northern Ireland cannot, I feel, be overstated. His vision has always been to bring peace and stability It has been to bring about economic prosperity, all the while firmly securing our place within the UK. I believe Peter’s legacy will be underpinned by the realisation of each of these goals.

When Peter leaves the stage, NI will have lost a transformative and strategic voice.

I would like to thank him for his persevering advice and support to me personally and wish him and his family every ounce of peace and enjoyment as he retires.

Diane Dodds, DUP MEP
