If Catherine Seeley does the unthinkable and Sinn Fein achieve their first Upper Bann Member of Parliament, Ulster Unionist Party egotism and self-preservation will have much to answer for.
Of course, while Joanne Dobson’s campaign will have been anything but helpful to retaining a Unionist representative for the constituency at Westminster she should not take all the blame.
Many in this constituency will continue to remember that Ms Seeley was handed a political platform, and a Deputy Mayoral chain no less, in a side deal with UUP Councillor Colin McCusker last year, in order to secure the final Mayor’s position for himself. Mr McCusker preferred to bargain with Sinn Fein than risk missing out on the status to a fellow Unionist. We may well reap what he has sown.
