Nigel Lawson is one of our most distinguished former chancellors and his comments yesterday that the prime minister had no real hope of renegotiating the UK terms for remaining in the EU since it involved treaty change, lays bare the weakness at the heart of the government’s position.
As Lord Lawson said, the real EU is now the eurozone which has its own currency. Britain is, and never will be, part of that. The logical next step is to leave and do what Britain has always done best — seek our living in worldwide trade and make our own trade treaties, boosted by our network of worldwide links in the Commonwealth.
The world economy has moved on from Europe. The EU is yesterday’s story. The future lies in worldwide trade.
