As an ex-serviceman, a long-standing member of the Royal British Legion and a practising member of the Church of Ireland, I want to record my disgust at the Rev Kingsley Sutton’s removal of RBL standards from the Church of St Mary’s.
Standards laid up in church are done so in a proper service, into the safe keeping of the church in perpetuity, and legally the reverend gentleman cannot remove them.
He wanted to break from the past; the relatives of those who served and died keep faith by those standards and honour those who served their country.
He has now apologised. But it was arrogant of the reverend gentleman to assume he can change the past by pulling up his own ridiculous flag.
Would he have removed all the memorials and stain glass windows as well?
