The belated comments by the News Letter and some Unionist MLAs regarding the recent attendance of Mr Eamon O Cuiv and other prominent Irish TDs at the appeal court in Londonerry in support of dissident republicans failed to ask the proper question.

The question which should have been put to Mr O Cuiv is as follows: ‘Mr O Cuiv, the great majority of Unionist people in Northern Ireland firmly believe that previous Irish governments in varying degrees, supported, gave succour to, helped finance and colluded with the Provisional IRA during its 40 year campaign of violence. What do you say to those people who now claim that by your attendance at this court, you, as a former Irish government Minister and supposed supporter of the peace process, have reinforced those beliefs, have displayed open support for the dissident republican campaign of violence, and have totally betrayed the peace process?’

Mr O Cuiv’s responses so far are a classic example of hypocrisy and doublespeak and do not stand up to scrutiny.

His grandfather Eamon De Valera ultimately betrayed Michael Collins when he tried to settle for peace in early 1920s. It would appear that Mr O Cuiv is anxious to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.
