Innocent Victims United, which contains members whose loved ones were murdered in the Newry and Mourne area, are deeply concerned at the position taken by local SDLP councillors not to vote on the re-naming of a playpark after Raymond McCreesh.
We have been contacted by many annoyed and frustrated victims and survivors since Wednesday night.
We are going to stay away from barracking local SDLP councillors and the position they adopted on Wednesday night. Political and moral cowardice along with gross insensitivity to victims sums it up, we need not elaborate.
But we now demand swift action to be taken by the SDLP’s leadership to rescue the situation and to make good with the commitment they gave to victims and the Newry and Mourne community that they would support re-naming.
That assurance was given by their party leader Dr Alasdair McDonnell and others in positions of leadership in the party.
We have been in direct contact with the leadership and we have insisted the need for an urgent response from the party.
If this matter is not rectified within the next 24 hours then we will be considering further steps. The SDLP must stand up to the bullyboy tactics of Sinn Fein and their phony and politically-motivated equality agenda.
