Martin McGuinness has stated that we should take at least 2,000 Syrian refugees.
Worthy sentiments indeed, Mr McGuinness.
He must be well aware of the situation here at present: the NHS, schools and housing are at breaking point, and added to that we have an already cut-throat labour market, which is driving our young people abroad.
The long-term ramifications of this will be felt in the not-too-distant future.
The people of this country have been shown to be very tolerant and welcoming to the massive wave of immigration we have already received in this small part of the world.
Simple truth is we already have enough foreign migrants.
Compassion can only go so far before economic realities turn to hostility.
