Animal welfare: The legend of Island Myth

Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary regularly report cases of animals coming into their care that have experienced extreme cruelty.

Recently, they highlighted the cruelty inflicted on two of ex-racehorses, Lucas and Solomon, who both came to Crosskennan in a state of poor health and neglect but are now well on their way to recovery.

However, there has been some great news on the progress of one former racehorse who has gone on to make his mark in the dressage arena.

A spokesperson for Crosskennan explained: “We are glad to say that not all ex-racers suffer such cruel fates as Lucas and Solomon did. After his riding career, 10 year old Island Myth was given a loving home by his groom who was able to rehome him under contract.

“Unfortunately due to a change in circumstances the new handler was unable to keep him any longer and he came into the care of Crosskennan.”

Lyn Friel, the sanctuary founder/manager, quickly recognised his potential and once he was back to full health it was decided to send him to Paivi Davies to be schooled.

He excelled under her careful tuition and was soon ready for his first dressage event.

Later that year he attended the NI Dressage Show at Danescroft and everyone was delighted at his performance - he took everything in his stride.

Both Lyn and Paivi are confident he has a promising career ahead of him in his new home.
