Former World champion Barry McGuigan believes his young charge Conrad Cummings will rise to the occasion when he fights for the Celtic title at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast on November 20.

Cummings will challenge Belfast middleweight Alfredo Meli for the belt and McGuigan believes Cummings will show that he is the real deal as he fights for his first professional title.

“He wants to be in title fights and I think he will put it all on the line in title fights.

“I really think you will see the best of him when something is on the line. He is a championship fighter.

“ I believe that when titles are on the line, we will see the best of Cummings. Conrad is a very ambitious guy and he is not content to fight down the bill.I believe we will see him shine when he fights for titles - because that is what he did when he was an amateur.

“And he will take the first step of that journey on November 20.”

And McGuigan says Cummings is getting stronger and stronger under trainer Shane McGuigan.

“I know how good he is I can see it in the gym. He is an exciting fighter who likes to get the job done.

“I really feel 10 rounds title fights are not too far off 12 round clashes- and he does 10 rounds in the gym regular.

“Once this 10 rounder is out of the way he will have more confidence he can do the rounds and we will be targeting the Commonwealth title.

“Look at James Degale he fought for the British title in just his ninth fight and we don’t want to hang around too long.

“Conrad has sparred with Billy Joe Saunders and Andy Lee and he controlled the spars. He is a real talent and we will see that in the coming months,” added McGuigan.

And Cummings has set his sights very high - before he tackles Meli in Belfast.

“I am in this game to be the best. I am not here to make up the numbers.

“I know were I want to go and that’s the top and I want to move toward the top as quick as possible,.

“A win will put me up there. I am on the same wave length as Barry I want to move on aggressively. So win this belt maybe a defence or two and then we will look toward British and Commonwealth title fights. I fought Meli when we were amateurs but that fight counts for nothing.”
