BOXING: Paddy Barnes victorious in opening World Series bout

Northern Ireland’s Paddy Barnes celebrating a unanimous points victory in his opening World Series of Boxing clash in Azerbaijan on Saturday.

The Irish Olympic medallist defeated Magomed Ibiyez 4-1 in the Light Flyweight contest, although there was disappointment for Michael Conlan in Baku.

Belfast fighter Conlan - also representing the Italia Thunder team against the Baku Fires - was beaten on all three cards by Magomed Guravbov.

Conlan’s father John and Ireland head coach Billy Walsh were working in the fighters’ c corners on Saturday.
