Belfast light flyweight Brendan Irvine is through to the last 16 of the World boxing championships in Doha after a unanimous 3-0 win over Nico Hernandez from the USA.
Irvine will be back in action on Thursday when he faces a Turkish opponent Muhammet Unlu in another tough test for the St Paul’s fighter.
But there was no joy for Wexford light welterweight Dean Walsh who was on the wrong end of a majority 2-1 decision against Luis Arcon Diaz from Venezula.
And Michael O’Reilly showed his class versus Valerii Kharlamov of the Ukraine to seal a 29-28,30-26,30-27 win.
Belfast’s Sean McComb and Adam Nolan will be in action on Wednesday versus Mexico and Lithuania.
Meanwhile, Ireland captain Michael Conlan will face Brazil’s Robenilson de Jesus in the last 16 on Thursday.
