The winners of this year’s RTÉ Sport Awards, in association with Sport Ireland were announced on Saturday night on RTÉ One television and RTÉ Player during the live broadcast of the ceremony which looked back on a momentous year in Irish sport.
After a stunning 2015 in which he became the first ever Irish World Championship Boxing gold medallist Michael Conlan, European and World Bantamweight Champion, was named the RTÉ Sport Person of the Year.
Conlan was named as BBC Sport Northern Ireland sports personality of the year on Thursday, completing a unique double.
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill was named RTÉ Sport Manager of the Year after a year which saw the Portadown-native guide his team to a first ever European Championship finals by topping their Euro 2016 qualification group.
As well as acknowledging this year’s sporting achievements, the RTÉ Sport Awards also paid tribute to one of Ireland’s greatest sporting legends. Kilkenny hurling icon Henry Shefflin was honoured with the RTÉ/Sport Ireland Hall of Fame Award. During a stellar career in which he won 10 All Ireland senior hurling titles he also received 11 All-Star awards.
The highly-coveted RTÉ Sport Team of the Year Award is voted for the viewing public and will be announced live on the show. (An amended release to reflect this will be sent later tonight)
The RTÉ Sport Awards were presented by RTÉ’s Darragh Maloney, and also featured a host of well-known Irish sports stars and analysts reflecting on the Irish sporting year that was.
