Ireland’s Katie Taylor has been beaten on a split decision by Finland’s Mira Potkenen at the Olympic Games in Rio.
It was a close call for Taylor as the fighters were level on the score cards. One went 39-37 to Taylor, one went 39-37 to Potkonen and one drew the fight at 38-38, but the judges then awarded the victory to Potkonen.
An emotional Taylor admitted she was not at her best during the encounter.
“It was very disappointing. It has been a very tough year and I have suffered losses this year which is hard to take.
“The Olympics is a dream for me and I came in here very well prepared and gave it my best shot. I am humbled by the support I have received,” she added.
It has been a disappointing Games for the Ireland team with Belfast’s Michael Conlan the only fighter left standing at the competition.
