Stuart Nelson, who is in his final year at Grosvenor Grammar School, has joined the NCU Premier League club from Section Two club Cregagh.

The teenager was named ‘1st XI Batsman of the Year’ following a fine 2016 season which saw him score over 500 runs and claim 26 wickets with his seam bowling. He also captained the NCU under-17 squad to the Inter-provincial title in Dublin.

In a statement on the North Down website, North Down chairman Peter Shields said: “We’re delighted that Stuart has committed to North Down and look forward to him joining up with the first team squad, he comes highly recommended to us and fits the player profile we want at the club perfectly. We have an excellent core of young local players at The Green and we hope in 2017, with the help of a new coach, that they will take the next step forward in their cricketing development.”

Nelson said: “I would firstly like to thank Cregagh for not only their understanding at my decision but the cricketing education they have provided which has led to this opportunity. I feel this is the right time to make the step up to the Premier League and I’m looking forward to working hard to make the move to North Down a successful one. Playing at The Green, which is widely regarded as the best pitch in the country, on a regular basis is an added bonus but scoring runs and taking wickets to help the team be successful is the main aim to begin with.”
