Dom Joyce and Max Sorensen produced match winning performances as Leinster Lightning outplayed the North West Warriors to win their Hanley Energy Inter-Provincial Cup game by six wickets at a sun drenched Rathmines.
Joyce celebrated his 34th birthday by top scoring with a fluent 86 from just 71 balls (12 fours, two sixes) as Lightning chased down a Warriors total of 211 to win with nearly 20 overs to spare.
The Merrion batsman won the last of his 69 international caps almost 8 years ago, and he showed the assembled crowd just what a talented and destructive batsman he is when in the mood.
Joyce shared a third wicket stand of 116 in only 105 deliveries with Clontarf’s Andrew Poynter, who struck eight fours and 2 sixes in his 61 from 62 balls.
Both fell in quick succession with the winning line in sight, but Kevin O’Brien (15) and Stuart Poynter (13), both unbeaten, ensured a routine win.
Graeme McCarter (2-37) removed Kenny Carroll (one) with the fourth ball of the innings, but John Anderson stroked five boundaries in a breezy 27 from just 15 balls, before he too was dismissed by McCarter.
Earlier, Max Sorensen had blown away the Warriors top order, reducing them to 21 for 4 in the 5th over, as Craig Averill, Scott Campbell and Stuart Thompson all failed to score.
Teenager Gary McClintock in tandem with his Donemana team mate Andy McBrine staged a salvage operation deciding attack was the best option.
McClintock hit 6 fours and three sixes in an entertaining 62 from 64 balls, while Warriors skipper McBrine hit seven boundaries in his 48.
David Rankin (27) and William McClintock (25) nade useful contributions to the final total of 211, but the Warriors committed the cardinal one-day sin of having 8.2 overs unused.
The focus now switches the international scene with three T20 fixtures between Ireland and Scotland at Bready this Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
