It was an all too familiar tale of what might have been for the North West Warriors at Sandel Lodge on Sunday night as they went down to a three-run defeat to the Northern Knights.
Chasing a rain adjusted target of 168 in 35 overs, the Warriors were 63 without loss before their batting came unstuck against spin.
The final margin of victory probably flattered the Warriors who needed an unlikely 19 from the final over with Andrew McBrine hitting the last ball of the match for six when victory was impossible.
Gary Kidd and Andrew White both took two wickets for the Knights.
The NCU side can hardly attribute the victory to local batting talent. CIYMS’ South African professional Rassie van der Dussen top scored with 93 from 96 balls, with James Shannon the next top scorer with just 31.
The quarter-final draw for the North West Senior Cup was made on Sunday and big three Donemana, Coleraine and Brigade were kept apart.
Holders Donemana, who thrashed Bonds Glen on Saturday, travel to Killyclooney, Brigade travel to Ardmore and Coleraine host Bready. Drummond host Eglinton in the other tie.
