Dungannon Swifts 2
Ballinamallard United 0
A slendid brace of headers by Andrew Burns helped Dungannon Swifts to a deserved victory at a sodden Stangmore Park.
Burns headed home his first from a Jamie Glackin corner on 16 minutes and repeated the trick nine minutes after the interval.
The relegation six-pointer then ended in controversy and with both teams being reduced to 10 men following the dismissals of Abiola Sanuzi and Liam McMenamin for an unsavorary incident on the right touchline.
A miserable afternoon for the visitors began with Liam Martin being denied by Swifts goalkeeper Andy Coleman after being released by Johnny Lafferty..
Swifts responded and duly broke the deadlock through Burns who headed a Glackin corner back across goal and inside the far post.
But the Mallards should have been level moments later when Jason McCartney picked the pocket of Swifts right-back Kris Lowe to drill a low shot agonisingly past Coleman’s left post.
At the opposite end the excellent Glackin curled inches wide from an Andrew Mitchell cut-back on the stroke of half-time.
Nine minutes into the second half Swifts did double their advantage when Burns again ghosted in at the back post to head home another Glackin corner from the left.
The Mallards offered little in the second period while Swifts could have added to their tally with visiting goalkeeper Stefan McCusker thwarting both Andrew Mitchell and Gary Liggett.
