Coleraine and Cliftonville cancelled each other out in an interesting game played in difficult conditions at the Coleraine Showgrounds.
The first chance of the match was created by Jay Donnelly on 18 minutes as the striker cut in from the right-hand side, before flashing an effort wide from an acute angle. At the other end, Darren McCauley’s goal bound effort was blocked for a corner after being found by Ruaihrdi Higgins in the box.
Jay Donnelly was proving to be a menace in the Cliftonville attack and he forced Michael Doherty into making a great save after being found by Martin Murray on 26 minutes. The Bannsiders created half chances through Matthew Snoddy, McCauley and Higgins but they couldn’t force a breakthrough.
Coleraine started the second-half on the front foot and McCauley cut the ball inside the box but Neil McCafferty failed to keep the ball on target from 12 yards. On 68 minutes, Jay Donnelly had another great chance to score as he beat the offside trap but he was denied by the legs of Doherty.
The home side sensed all three points as Watt’s cross was met by McCauley, but his effort was blocked with the follow-up being sent over the crossbar by Ian Parkhill. Only three minutes later, the Bannsiders carved out another opportunity as McGinty fed Parkhill but he was denied by Peter Cherrie as both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
