Superchin showed a return to his best form as he cruised to an impressive 4-1 third round victory over 22 seed Chris Dobey on Tuesday afternoon.

The number 11 seed from Derry, has fallen at the third round stage on five previous visits to the London venue but showed his class in a dominant display against the Newcastle native, averaging 101. Gurney, whose previous best at the worlds was a 2017 quarter-final appearance, has set up a mouthwatering clash with dangerous Dutchman van der Voort who was at his ruthless best when shocking world No.6 Nathan Aspinall 4-2 in the third round.

Gurney lost out to the 'Dutch Destroyer' in the second round of the World Matchplay last summer and the Tullyalley native says he's out for 'revenge'.

"It's about time the real Daryl Gurney turned up," smiled Gurney after his third round victory, "I think at this stage I can score with the best of them, finish with the best of them but it's about being on it every single day, giving yourself that opportunity and for me that's what I'm trying to do at the minute."

Gurney looked sharp and roared his way to the first set against Dobey but there was little between the two players in a brilliant opening with all five legs going with throw.

Superchin then took it up a notch at the start of the second set with two 13 darters and an 11 dart finish to take a two set lead.

Gurney survived a real scare to avoid a break in the fifth leg as he raced into a three set lead and while the Waterside man was in control, Dobey hit back to win the fourth set 3-1 to keep his world championship campaign alive.

"Chris played well but I stuck in there. I played well enough to win the game. Whenever I played Willie (O'Connor), I just gave away the third set. I said 'don't you dare do this again!'

"I still had belief, played well enough. I just thought to myself, 'keep on him'. I broke him with 11 darts. I didn't want to come out after the second break and give him that third set and that belief as it was a break of throw. I gave myself a good kicking.

"In previous tournaments I've been letting myself down. I thought to myself, even when he's hitting 180s 'just back it up with a 140. Just keep doing what you're doing. Play your game and don't do what stupid Daryl does when somebody hits a 180 and you snatch at the first dart and you don't hit a treble'."

There were no such fears as Gurney went out to take the fifth and decisive set as he goes into the last 16 tie with confidence. And he hopes a decent run in the competition can turnaround what has been a 'rubbish year'.

"I was going to come out and give it 110 per cent and so was Chris. I was rubbish throughout this year after the UK Open.

"We're in the biggest tournament of the year and if we can win a couple of rounds here we can turnaround our whole year. From being absolute rubbish I could have a decent year. Thankfully I got over the finish line."

When asked if he was looking forward to facing van der Voort, Gurney responded: "I don't care if he's watching this. He beat me in the matchplay. It's time for a wee bit of revenge."
