Chris Brunt has urged Northern Ireland team-mate Gareth McAuley to stay at West Brom.

Speculation continues to mount over the future of defender McAuley, who is wanted by his former club Leicester City.

The 35-year-old has made 138 appearances in his four years at The Hawthorns, playing a major role in helping the club stay in the Barclays Premier League.

McAuley has been offered a new one-year deal by West Brom but appears to be keeping his options open.

“I am quite surprised it has reached the situation it is currently in. It is a no-brainer for me,” said Brunt.

“He is someone who plays every week in the Premier League. People talk about his age, but if you see him in training he is a very fit lad. For the age of him, he is a bit of a freak.

“For him to be getting those high levels of performance week in, week out is fantastic.

“Every since he got back in the side around Christmas time he hasn’t looked back.

“He has been like that ever since he joined the club.

“Hopefully they will get that sorted.”
