English side Altrincham were narrowly beaten 2-1 by South Donegal Schoolboys at Leafair Park in the Foyle Cup under 13s’ semi-final.
Altrincham took the lead early in the game after a deflection saw the ball beat the Donegal keeper low on his left.
The Donegal youngsters were unfortunate to have a penalty decision turned down late in the first half and had a couple of opportunities to draw level, the best being from an Alex McGinley free-kick which sailed over the crossbar.
With wind advantage in the second period, Donegal Schoolboys started the brighter. They were on level terms after good work by Josh Maxwell, who cut inside his marker and shot low under Altrincham keeper Ben Howarth.
With their tails up and the wind at their backs, it was pressure by the local side that saw them take the lead ten minutes later.
Damien Webber collected the ball in midfield before sliding through to the inrushing Cathal McGeever, who lobbed over the goalkeeper to put his side ahead.
Donegal had a few more opportunities to extend their lead but were happy to see the game out and proceed to another Saturday’s finals day in the Foyle Cup.
