Glentoran boss Patterson heaps praise on Scullion

Glentoran boss Eddie Patterson hailed two goal David Scullion after this demolition job on Institute at the rain lashed Oval.

Scullion struck in each half, with Danny McKee and little Jordan Stewart making it another miserable afternoon for an Institute side that now has relegation written all over.

Even though Robbie Hume reduced the deficit in the second, they never appeared capable of getting anything from this game.

The North West side now haven’t won in 11 games and they are only one point ahead of basement side Warrenpoint Town.

But it was all smiles in the home dressing room, with Patterson praising Scullion, who has now hit the net on nine occasions this season.

“His finishing has been superb,” beamed Patterson.

“Scullie has scored some important goals for us. His opener set us on our way today, it was a clinical strike.

“And, his second was just Scullie -- a brilliant effort. He also does an awful lot work off the ball. He gets back and defends and gets in vital interceptions that go unnoticed most of the time.

“Hopefully, he can now kick on from this.”

Patterson was also thrilled with the result -- a response from his team’s Boxing Day defeat by rivals Linfield.

“We thought we should have got something at Windsor, so we knew we had to respond,” added Patterson.

“I would describe it as a work-man-like display, coupled with some good goals.

“I thought we played some great stuff for the first 35 minutes or so.

“We squeezed them really hard high up the park. But when we went two in front, we got a bit sloppy.

“Our work rate dropped a wee bit but the third goal killed it and it could have been more.”

Institute manager Paul Kee had to rush away straight after the final whistle to attend a family function, leaving experience defender Paddy McLaughin to sum up the team’s performance.

“We were punished for every mistake, but that’s the way it is in this league,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we now haven’t won in 11 games and are now right down in the relegation mix.

“Every match is now massive. We still have a great belief in the dressing room, but we must start picking up points before it’s too late.”
