GLENTORAN 3 DUNGANNON 0
Glentoran progressed to the semi-finals of the Irish Cup after ending Dungannon Swifts’ dreams.
Curtis Allen gave the home side a first half lead in dreadful conditions at the Oval.
Marcus Kane doubled their lead, before Niall Henderson’s late penalty completed the scoring.
Glentoran had faced lower league opposition in the previous two rounds, but this was a more difficult task.
Likewise for Dungannon, who had seen off Ballinamallard and Ballyclare to make the last eight.
The Glens were missing Jordan Stewart and Steven Gordon, who were both serving one-game bans.
Meanwhile, Swifts boss Darren Murphy opted to stick with his policy of using back-up goalkeeper Alvin Rouse in the cup.
And Rouse was called into action inside the first minute, saving from Marcus Kane.
Soon afterwards he had to tip the ball over after an ambitious free-kick attempt by Elliott Morris, who went for goal from two yards inside his own half.
The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute.
David Scullion’s strike took a nick off a defender, Rouse reacted well to tip the ball on to the post, but Allen scored from the rebound.
Dungannon played some good stuff at times but struggled to test Elliott Morris. Gary Liggett saw a strike go over while Matt Hazley’s curling effort was easily collected.
Glentoran could have doubled their lead in the 33rd minute.
Stephen McAlorum was fouled on the edge of the box but Allen couldn’t get the resulting free-kick on target.
Dungannon threatened at the start of the second half when Liggett worked the goalkeeper after meeting a Hazley free-kick.
At the other end McAlorum headed wide after stretching to meet a cross.
Glentoran wrapped up the game through Kane’s second.
A corner led to a goalmouth scramble, Kym Nelson was brilliantly denied but Kane was on hand to hammer home the rebound.
Late on David Armstrong fouled Allen, resulting in a red card and a penalty, which Henderson converted.
